Join the NextGen Committee

Have an interest in building a better Edmonton, working with a group of engaged peers, and developing valuable leadership skills? We're seeking three engaged and highly motivated people to join the NextGen Committee!

What is NextGen?

The NextGen Committee is an Administrative Committee of the City of Edmonton that was established in 2006 in the Department of Citizen Services. Through community and civic projects, events and leadership opportunities, Edmonton’s NextGen fosters young leaders and provides a platform for initiatives of interest to the next generation.

There are currently 16 members on the NextGen Committee who volunteer and represent the community and the City of Edmonton. Participation on NextGen is a volunteer position.

The NextGen Committee is currently looking to fill 4 Committee positions:

Communications Co-Chair

The Communications Co-Chair will be responsible for providing support to NextGen Working Group projects and events and assisting with NextGen’s overall communications internally with the Committee and externally to the public. The Communications Co-Chair will also be responsible for the following:

  • Working with their counterpart NextGen Communications Co-Chair and help lead a Working Group (subcommittee) of volunteers with projects that focus on communications activities
  • Assisting in coordinating and hosting monthly Working Group meetings

  • Works with the NextGen Committee and NextGen Coordinator on NextGen communications that include creating communications planning and advice for NextGen’s projects and events

  • Facilitating and assisting the communications needs of the Working Group projects and events, helping promote NextGen’s projects and events on social media and providing overarching communications support

  • Assisting with managing the NextGen website and ensuring that NextGen is actively using its social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.

This position is expected to attend the following meetings:

  • Monthly NextGen Committee meetings every 2nd  Monday from 5:30-7:30pm

  • Monthly Sustainability Working Group meetings  the 1st Wednesday of the month 5:30-7:30pm

  • Communications Working Group meetings (these meetings are determined by working group members' availability)

Strategy and Operations Chair

The Strategy and Operations Chair will be responsible for leading and providing support to updating the Committee’s strategic plan. This position will also be responsible for the following:

  • Working closely with Civic and Community Committee Co-Chairs and the Coordinator in facilitating the process of creating an updated strategic plan

  • Assisting and supporting the NextGen Committee to ensure alignment of the Committee’s Strategic Plan with Working Group activities

  • Assisting the Committee set its annual objectives and targets which includes evaluation of the results of initiatives to achieve the targets

  • Creating templates and processes to assist in tracking, measuring and evaluating NextGen projects and events

This position is expected to attend the following meetings:

  • Monthly NextGen Committee meetings every 2nd Monday from 5:30-7:30pm

  • Monthly Sustainability Working Group meetings the 1st Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:30pm

Ignite Working Group Co-Chair

The Ignite Working Group fosters opportunities for the next generation to positively impact their community largely through informational, networking experiences and community-building projects and events such as MEAET, a micro-funding dinner that provides a microfund to entrepreneurs, startups and and community organizations.

The Co-Chair will be responsible for:

  • Managing and leading a group of 10-12 volunteers

  • Planning and hosting two to three MEAET micro-funding dinners per year
  • Planning and hosting other events as set-out by the working group in coordination with the NextGen Committee
  • Developing annual strategies and goals that align with the overall goals of the NextGen Committee
  • Planning and hosting other events as set-out by the working group in coordination with the NextGen Committee
  • Developing and monitoring an annual budget, and working closely with the Partnerships Chair to secure sponsorships/partnerships

Ignite Working Group meetings and Google hangouts are held at the discretion of the Working Group Co-Chairs. A new regular monthly meeting date is currently being established and will be shared with any candidates interviewed for this position.

This position is expected to attend the following meetings:

  • Monthly NextGen Committee meetings every 2nd Monday from 5:30-7:30pm

  • Monthly Ignite Working Group meetings on the 3rd Tuesday from 6:00-8:00pm

Member at Large

This a new position on the NextGen Committee. The Member at Large is responsible for the following:

  • Assuming leadership of a minimum of one (1) Committee-led project, event or initiative

  • The member in this position is expected to contribute ideas, strategies and volunteer time in support of committee goals, governance and strategic plans

This position is expected to attend the following meetings:

  • Monthly NextGen Committee meetings every 2nd Monday from 5:30-7:30pm

  • Monthly Sustainability Working Group meetings the 1st Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:30pm

  • Any meetings on the project, event or initiative this position is focused on

Criteria

We are looking for individuals who are within the next generation demographic (18 to 40 years old), who have a keen interest in community and civic development, and who are willing to spend 10-15 hours per month leading other volunteers who work on projects and events that help to make Edmonton a city that is shaped by the aspirations of its young leaders.

Time commitment for all positions:

  • Commit to a minimum of a two-year (2) term that begins in May

  • Commit to a minimum of 10-15+ volunteer hours a month

  • Take on one of the above Committee positions, work with a Co-Chair and and co-lead a group of approximately 10+ volunteers that meet 1-2 times a month

  • Attend 10 regularly scheduled meetings of the NextGen Committee during the year

  • Additional meetings may be held at the call of the Co-Chairs

  • Attending the Committee’s spring and/or fall strategic planning sessions (~5 hours on a Saturday, once or twice per year)

  • Engaging and informing volunteers about NextGen events and initiatives

  • Attending the various events hosted by NextGen and its Working Groups and serving as a representative of the Committee at NextGen events

Once we receive all applications, the nominating committee will review and select candidates for an interview for a Committee position. Interviews will take place the last week of April, beginning of May. Only successful candidates will be contacted for an interview.
