Edmonton’s NextGen Committee is currently looking for Community members from the public and Civic members from the City of Edmonton to join its Committee

Edmonton’s NextGen is an Administrative Committee of the City of Edmonton that was formed in 2006. Housed within the Department of Citizen Services and led by volunteers, NextGen is also supported by City of Edmonton Administration and City Council with 1-2 City Councillor designated on the Committee. Through various events, initiatives, and leadership opportunities, Edmonton’s NextGen fosters young leaders and helps to build Edmonton as a City that the next generation is proud to call home.

There are currently 8 community members and 5 City staff who all volunteer as members of the NextGen Committee. NextGen is looking to fill the following Committee positions with additional volunteers from the community/public and within the City of Edmonton administration:

1. Pecha Kucha Night (PKN) Event Co-Chair

Pecha Kucha Nights provide an opportunity for Edmontonians to share their diverse interests, stories and knowledge with an engaged audience in a presentation format of 6 mins and 40 seconds. Key skills required for this position include working with fellow PKN Co-Chair, event management, volunteer management and strong communication and organization skills. The Co-Chair will be responsible for:

  • Managing and leading a group of 10-12 volunteers and supporting their volunteer needs

  • Organizing monthly meetings with the PKN working group volunteers, including finding meeting space, ordering catering, creating agendas

  • Planning and hosting 3 Pecha Kucha Night events per year

  • Event management, planning, budgeting, promotion, and execution of events

  • Developing annual strategies and goals that align with the overall goals of the NextGen Committee

  • Developing and monitoring an annual budget, and working closely with the Partnerships Chair to secure sponsorships/partnerships

  • Attending & participating in 2-3 evening meetings each month (NextGen Committee Meeting and PKN Working Group meetings), an annual strategic meeting (on a Saturday), as well as supporting/attending other NextGen events as required.

Pecha Kucha Working Group meetings are held at the discretion of the Working Group Co-Chairs, and are currently scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month, from 5:30-7:30pm.

2. Volunteer Engagement Co-Chair

The Volunteer Engagement Co-Chair supports the attraction, retention and management of NextGen’s volunteers as well as organizes professional development events.  Key skills required for this position include working with fellow Volunteer Engagement Co-Chair, volunteer management, event management and strong communications and organization skills. The Co-Chair will be responsible for:

  • Meeting with working group co-chairs to understand and support their volunteer needs

  • Organizing monthly meetings with Volunteer Engagement working group volunteers, including finding meeting space, ordering catering, creating agendas

  • Leading an annual and ongoing volunteer recruitment campaign and maintaining a list of available and/or interested volunteers

  • Supporting the engagement and retention of volunteers through skill development, networking and recognition events and initiatives

  • Event management, planning, budgeting, promotion, and execution of 1-2 professional development events

  • Developing annual strategies and goals that align with the overall goals of the NextGen Committee

  • Developing and monitoring an annual budget

  • Attending & participating in 3 evening meetings each month (NextGen Committee Meeting, Sustainability Committee Meeting, and a Volunteer Engagement Meeting), an annual strategic meeting (on a Saturday), as well as supporting/attending other NextGen events as required.  

The Volunteer Engagement Co-Chairs are members of NextGen’s Sustainability Committee. Sustainability Committee meetings are held at the discretion of the Sustainability Co-Chairs, and are currently scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month from 6:00-7:30pm.

3. Ignite Working Group Co-Chair

The Ignite Working Group fosters opportunities for the next generation to positively impact their community largely through informational and networking experiences such as MEAET, a micro-funding dinner. Key skills required for this position include working with fellow Volunteer Ignite Co-Chair, volunteer management, event management and strong communications and organization skills. The Co-Chair will be responsible for:

  • Managing and leading a group of 10-12 volunteers and supporting their volunteer needs

  • Organizing monthly meetings with the Ignite working group volunteers, including finding meeting space, ordering catering, creating agendas

  • Planning and hosting two to three MEAET micro-funding events per year

  • Planning and hosting other events as set-out by the working group , such as group community volunteer events and networking events for new residents to Edmonton

  • Event management, planning, budgeting, promotion, and execution of events

  • Developing annual strategies and goals that align with the overall goals of the NextGen Committee

  • Developing and monitoring an annual budget, and working closely with the Partnerships Chair to secure sponsorships/partnerships

Ignite Working Group meetings are held at the discretion of the Working Group Co-Chairs, and are currently scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month, from 6-8pm. Also, additional meetings are scheduled as needed.

4.  Communications Co-Chair (2 positions available)

The Communications Co-Chair will be responsible for providing communications, social media and website support to NextGen’s projects and events. Key skills required for this position include working with fellow Communications Co-Chair,  being social media savvy, volunteer management, website management, and have strong public relations skills to help promote NextGen in the community and to the public. The Communications Co-Chairs will be responsible for:

  • Managing and leading a group of 10-12 volunteers and supporting their volunteer needs

  • Organizing monthly meetings with the Communications working group volunteers, including finding meeting space, ordering catering, creating agendas

  • Weekly management of the Edmonton NextGen website for copy-writing, adding photos, website maintenance and creating blogs posts of NextGen events and projects

  • Promoting NextGen and its projects, events on social media including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and daily management of the social media platforms

  • Attend NextGen events and gatherings and live tweet during the event, provide Facebook and Instagram posts

  • Works with the NextGen Committee and NextGen Coordinator on City of Edmonton and NextGen communications

  • Managing, assisting and facilitating the communications needs of the NextGen Committee and Working Groups by providing overarching communications support

  • Assisting in coordinating and hosting monthly Working Group meetings

Communications Working Group meetings are held once a month at the discretion of the Working Group Co-Chairs.

When requested, the Communications Co-Chairs may be asked to attend the Sustainability Committee. Sustainability Committee meetings are held at the discretion of the Sustainability Co-Chairs, and are currently scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month, from 6:00-7:30pm

Criteria for all positions:

We are looking for individuals who are within the next generation demographic (18 to 40 years old), who currently work at the City of Edmonton and individuals from the community/public, who have a keen interest in community and civic development, and who are willing to spend 10-15 hours per month leading other volunteers in work on projects and events that help to make Edmonton a City that is shaped by the aspirations of its young leaders.

All five vacancies are for a (2) two-year term with the NextGen Committee commencing on January 1, 2019. Additional responsibilities of all Committee members include:

  • Attending regular meetings of the Committee (9 per year on the second Monday of the month, excluding June, July and August, from 5:30-7:30pm)

  • Attending the Committee’s spring and/or fall strategic planning sessions (~5 hours on a Saturday, once or twice per year)

  • Engaging and informing volunteers about NextGen events and initiatives

  • Attending the various events hosted by NextGen and its Working Groups and serving as a representative of the Committee at NextGen events
