NextGen is Looking for New Members to Join the Committee

The NextGen Committee is currently looking for civic and community members to join its Committee.

The Edmonton NextGen Committee is an Administrative Committee of the City of Edmonton in the Department of Community Services.

The mandate of the NextGen Committee is to create a city that attracts and gives a voice to this demographic in the life and growth of our community. NextGen is a hub for connecting people, places, community, and ideas together. Through events, leadership opportunities, and professional development we foster young leaders and support initiatives of interest to this demographic.

We are looking for individuals who are within the next gen demographic and who have a keen interest in community development and working on projects that are relevant to 18-40 year old residents of Edmonton. We seek dynamic and action-oriented individuals who can: Commit to a minimum of a two-year (2) period,  Attend regular monthly  Committee meetings at a downtown location, Lead a Working Group of volunteers and attend Working Group monthly meetings.

More specifically, some of the expectations of a NextGen Committee member are as follows:

Attend 10 regularly scheduled meetings of the NextGen Committee during the year. These meetings are currently held on the second Monday of each month from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Additional meetings may be held at the call of the Co-Chairs.

The time commitment of a NextGen Committee member is approximately 8-15 hours a month.

Take on one of (1) the following Committee position(s) and organize and lead Working Group monthly meetings:

(Please note Civic Co-Chair positions are reserved for City of Edmonton employees and Community Co-Chair positions are reserved for individuals from the general community).

Civic Co-Chair Voice Working Group                                                                     Identify and create opportunities for the civic and community engagement of Edmontonians ages 18 to 40 (“NextGeners”); identify, advance, and take part in opportunities to provide input and feedback to the City of Edmonton and City Council regarding issues of concern and interest to NextGeners.

Civic Co-Chair of Sustainability Working Group                                                         Provide direction to the NextGen Committee with regards to Committee governance, update Terms of Reference & Procedures, organize and facilitate strategic plans, manage recruitment and volunteers, manage sponsorship requirements and requests from Working Groups.

Civic Co-Chair of Strategy and Operations (part of Sustainability Working
Group) - Assist in updating the Committee’s strategic plan. Work closely with Civic, Community Co-Chairs and the Coordinator in facilitating the process of creating an updated strategic plan. Assisting and supporting the NextGen Committee to ensure alignment of the Committee’s Strategic Plan with Working Group activities. This is done through the establishment of annual objectives and targets which includes evaluation of the results of initiatives to achieve the targets.

Community Co-Chair and Civic Co-Chair for the Ignite Working Group  The Ignite Working Group is focused on discovering, fostering, incubating, and expanding the new project-based ideas that have become an increasingly salient component of NextGen. There are three overlapping directives that work to fulfill this mandate: 1. MEÆT, our in-house developed, micro-granting meal event, which we will host a minimum of three times annually and grow into a flagship event, 2. Develop sustainable organizational leadership and further the mandate of NextGen by guiding one initiative, chosen by the committee, each year from inception to completion and 3. Create a best-practice toolkit and leadership capacity to efficaciously deal with ad-hoc collaborative opportunities as they arrive.

Community Co-Chair and Civic Co-Chair for the Pecha Kucha Working Group Provide opportunities for young  Edmontonians to share their diverse interests, talents and knowledge to an engaged audience through Pecha Kucha Night events. The working group is responsible for building relationships with the community and managing and executing a minimum of three Pecha Kucha Nights annually.

Community Co-Chair Volunteer Coodinator (part of the Sustainability Working Group) – Be the point of contact for volunteers interested in volunteering on a Working Group, provide information on the type of volunteer opportunities available and will be responsible for helping recruit volunteers when Working Groups are in need of help for events. Meet with the Co-Chairs of the Working Groups to determine what their volunteer needs are and help plan and organize fun volunteer social events. Assist the NextGen Coordinator with the recruitment process of new Committee members.

Civic Co-Chair Of the NextGen Committee - Work closely with the Community Co-Chair and the NextGen Coordinator, organize, lead and Chair the monthly NextGen Committee meetings, work with Committee members to ensure that the Committee is effective and efficient in fulfilling the vision, mission and strategic plans, provide strong leadership to inspire other Committee Members to uphold their duties in achieving the vision, mission and strategic plans, serve as official representatives to City Administration and the public, work with the NextGen Coordinator and Civic Representatives to ensure that the strategic plan initiatives are realized by the City of Edmonton, actively promote community outreach to ensure Community members are accountable for representing their community, bringing forth their ideas in a professional and timely manner and help facilitate discussions on community outreach and partnerships with community groups, actively promote civic outreach and ensure that Civic members are accountable for representing their Departments as well as The City of Edmonton’s goals, aligning NextGen’s projects and events with the City of Edmonton’s vision, Edmonton’s strategic plan and long range strategic plans (i.e. The Way We Live, The Way We Green, The Way We Move, etc.).

Once we receive all applications on Nov 28, the nominating will interview those who they wish to interview for a Committee position. Interviews will likely take place the 3rd week of December.
