Ideas for Edmonton
The Ideas4Yeg project closed with over 55 entries of creative proposals to showcase Edmonton. The variety of imaginative ideas is itself a demonstration of the energy that is increasingly more common when people talk about Edmonton. Here at NextGen, we are excited to announce the three proposals that you have voted to be the next big ideas for YEG!
The YEG Haunted House Revival has been awarded $6,000 to resurrect a beloved community fixture. The Scarecrow Festival hosted the volunteer-run haunted house for 20 years, before having to close its doors in 2012. Passionate volunteers and fans of the event banded together to bring back the horrifying haunt as a way to “establish an ongoing event that is a landmark in Edmonton.” Proceeds from the revived haunted house will once again go to support ABC Head Start, the educational and family support program that has been serving Edmonton since 1985.
The Isaak Kornelsen Memorial Parklet on Whyte has been awarded $4,000 to build a tribute to the young man who lost his life cycling on Whyte Avenue in 2012. The site will be a green space equipped with multi-use seating. It will fill two metered parking spots in front of Café Mosaics (10844 82 Avenue), and will extend into half of a driving lane. The parklet will not only stand in memory of Isaak, but will also draw attention to alternative modes of transportation and be a visual and physical deterrent to speeding.
A proposal to hold a competition to design new street barricades for Edmonton’s markets and festivals has been awarded $2,000 to come to fruition. Current street barricades are standard construction fixtures and do not reflect the artistic and imaginative nature of our festival city.
We would like to thank our sponsors and Make Something Edmonton for their assistance in making this project possible. We’d also like to thank everyone who participated in Ideas4Yeg, whether by contributing an idea or by voting. Every idea is a potential seed of change, and each of you that lent your voices to those ideas have spoken up for how you want Edmonton to grow.
