Ignite presents Ideas for Edmonton, a crowd funding model with a twist! Community members who are passionate about making Edmonton a better place to live are encouraged to post their project on the Ideas for Edmonton website – backers throw their support for projects with votes rather than donations. Edmonton’s NextGen, and a host of sponsors, kick-in the financial backing with $10,000 in funding available.

“Have you ever wanted to make a difference in your community but didn’t know where to start? You are not alone,” says Sherman Tsang, Ignite Co-Chair. “Ideas for Edmonton is a local social incubator, a tool to help turn thoughts into actions. Any city resident, looking to make Edmonton a better place to live, can submit a single idea that could be turned into reality!”

Ideasforedmonton.com is an easy-to-use on-line portal where the public can register ideas, search out interesting projects, discuss opportunities and cast votes.

Voting is tallied in three ways:

A single vote is counted when an individual comments on an idea (a single vote per user, not per comment);

A single vote is counted when an individual clicks on the +1 Give Vote link on an idea page;

Two votes are counted when an individual clicks on the +2 Give Time link on an idea page.

Individuals that click this option will be contacted by NextGen following the competition to connect with fellow voters for potential volunteer opportunities to make a specific project move forward.

Idea submissions and Round 1 votes are accepted until April 21st. The top 10 ideas, as calculated by total votes, will go on to Round 2 where a panel of judges will select one or two ideas to receive funding, volunteer support (as sourced through the +2 Give Time voters) and additional mentoring from established makers in the community. Edmonton’s NextGen is proud to foster the success of a variety of community projects and lend its planning expertise to the winning projects. Final winners will be announced in early May, 2013.

Timeline

Round 1: Voting

March 21st, 2013: Launch, Submissions open for ideasforEdmonton.com

March 22nd, 2013 (Noon): Winners for the Blue Plate Diner gift certificates + New Balance Acupuncture treatment are drawn

March 24th, 2013 (11:59PM): Top Voted Idea by this point is automatically selected as 1 of 10 Top Voted Ideas going into Round 2

April 21st, 2013 (11:59 PM): Voting Stops, end of Round #1

Round 2: Judging

April 23rd, 2013: Top 10 Voted Ideas Announced, Round 2 Forms provided

Round 2 Forms to be provided to Top 10 by Ignite. These forms serve as your application for funding and support from Edmonton’s NextGen Ignite. Completed forms must be completed by deadline to qualify for consideration.

April 28th, 2013 (11:59 PM): Deadline for filling in Round 2 Forms/Documents

May 2nd, 2013: Winner(s) Announced!

Historically, the decision to purchase local was an easy one. You would never have to make a point to do so, and in fact would have to deliberately seek out an alternative. Unfortunately, in current market conditions it is often cheaper to buy goods produced afar despite the added cost of packaging, transportation, etc.. Despite this, support for locally owned businesses is growing as

more and more people are discovering the intrinsic value in spending their money somewhere besides the major chains.

When talking about the environment, it’s easy to get caught up on green initiatives. While these are certainly important, now more than ever, we wanted to focus on the urban environment, the city we live in, and ways in which we can develop and improve it.

Locally owned businesses are the lifeblood of a vibrant community.

These businesses provide the character to a neighborhood and to the city that set it apart from the rest. They are often the first to give back to the community as well: offering time, money and know-how when called on.

Cash Mobbing is simple – it’s a movement of people motivated to respond to their community’s businesses and economic state.

People spend money, they vote with their dollars, we choose what we want to see with the ‘paper’ we exchange.

It’s our goal to help ‘shape’ our communities into strong, stable and rewarding places to be by reminding people of the influence they have on the local economic scene.

Cash Mob Edmonton is the effort in which this ‘shaping’ becomes a reality, and a group reality at that. It all started about a month ago, when an article was brought to our attention of a different way to approach shopping local – making it a concentrated group effort. It didn’t take long, an hour, to get the ball rolling, and soon thereafter we began working, along with our friend Cassandra Harper.

We then took in nominations via Facebook from friends who liked the initiative. We got the nominations; had the businesses and watering hole chosen; and three weeks later, 30 people showed up to Carbon Environmental Boutique, Dauphine’s Bakery and Lit Wine Bar. Success. Over $1,000 spent in under an hour, and extensive free marketing for these businesses as media and social networking sites went abuzz.

Now we look ahead.

Our next event is on April 25th,

and already we have swelling numbers of interested people. We want to grow, simply and succinctly, into a group that reminds people of the ‘good’ in this city. Being in Edmonton presents many opportunities for growth, wealth, development and play . We have the opportunity to start a movement that actually encourages more people to become involved with local businesses, and perhaps become entrepreneurs themselves – if the demand exists, then make it.

Towards the end of my maternity leave, I was looking for ways to become more involved in shaping and contributing to my local community – it felt like I was entering a meaningful new phase in my life and I wanted to share and contribute to something meaningful as well. NextGen has provided me with an amazing place to collaborate on projects and ideas with talented, engaged people who are as excited as I am about what happens in this city.

At the Mayor’s Think Tank: Our Arts, Our City in June, I heard Peter Kageyama speak about loving one’s city and the many benefits of creating “lovable cities”. In his presentation he highlighted some projects in other communities that he saw as “love-letters” from residents to their city, and one of them was monthly micro-granting dinner in Detroit. It brought together a diverse group of people who were all interested in their community to break bread, share ideas, and collectively fund a creative initiative with a local focus. Using this model as the inspiration, the Engage Committee hosted the first MEÆT in August.

We wanted to keep the first event casual and take advantage of the wonderful long summer days we enjoy here, so we decided to hold the first event in my mother’s garden. While it might seem somewhat presumptuous to volunteer someone else’s yard for a party of 50 strangers, my mum and I host charity teas there in the summer and I suppose I just assumed that she wouldn’t mind one more event. Luckily, I was right, Mum was on board – although in retrospect that could have created quite a problem!

It was really important to us that we not only celebrate great local ideas, but that we also celebrate great locally-sourced cuisine – we were so lucky to have the participation of some fantastic local food and beverage providers. I must admit that I was mostly running around during the meal, but I enjoyed a delicious plate after everyone left – it was by far the most scrumptious barbeque I attended this summer! MEÆT 1.0 is taking place in Shop Local First month, so we are hoping to highlight this component even further this time around.

We had some terrific presentations at MEÆT 0.5, but what really impressed me was how varied the proposed initiatives were – there is so much creative energy in so many fields in Edmonton. Our inaugural winner, Operation Fruit Rescue Edmonton, will be presenting on their project, and we can also look forward to some of their cider at the event! I am really looking forward to sharing another meal with some fellow Edmontonians and hearing some more amazing, innovative pitches this time around!
