Candi{date} Conversation Continues

If you made it to Candi{date} on Tuesday night you know how important it is to learn about the provincial MLA and Senate Nominee candidates and their parties. If you didn’t make it don’t worry – you can get a taste for it here.

There was a lot of press coverage for the event. Not surprising, perhaps, given the amount of attention people seem to be paying to this election. Global News, for example, interviewed several Next Gen volunteers as well as University of Alberta students about their opinions on the election.

Do you agree with them? Have the issues you care most about been covered?

The Edmonton Sun says youth won’t vote on Monday. What do you think – will you and your peers get out and vote?

Have your say. Complete the 2012 NextGen survey.

The purpose of this survey is to gain feedback from the community on NextGen’s mission and vision. The information collected will be used to help guide the future work, projects and events of the NextGen Committee.

The survey deadline has been extended until March 28th at 4:00 p.m.

Take the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NextGenSurvey2012

The survey will take about 7-10 minutes to complete.

Please note: Your answers will remain confidential. The results of this study will be presented only in group format – findings will be summarized in a report and no single person will be identifiable.

If you experience difficulties while you are completing this online survey, please contact the NextGen Coordinator at nextgen@edmonton.ca or (780) 496-4889.

Looking back at Up{date}

Common water cooler discussion during an election is around how to get young people more involved and engaged in the democratic process. Even in a non-election year, Edmonton’s NextGen continued its efforts on this front through Up{Date} 2011 held October 5th at the Art Gallery of Alberta.

Now, be honest. When you think government, speed dating generally isn’t the next thing to pop in your mind. NextGen though is aiming to change that as it uses a speed dating format as the basis for these discussions. At Up{Date} Councillors Krushell, Iveson, Sohi, Batty andHendersonalong with Mayor Stephen Mandel and Fire Chief Ken Block were each stationed at their own table with attendees coming to them. Every 20 minutes, attendees rotated to a different table to hear new views, answers and insight. This small group, interactive format is designed to allow for increased discussion and direct connection to each civic leader.

Up{Date} follows on the footsteps of Candi{Date} which were two similar events held during the 2010 civic election campaign. Those too mimicked the speed dating format but had numerous candidates out seeking to connect with voters. Feedback on those from both candidates and participants indicated the format was unique and allowed for better discussion. This inspired NextGen to run Up{Date} and continue the conversations even in non-election years.

There was a good turnout of ‘daters’ at Up{Date} and the hope is that more Edmontonians will take advantage of future opportunities to connect so closely with the representatives that shape their city. That way their views can be heard and they too can have a more prominent role in making this a better Edmonton.

What do you think? City Centre Redevelopment

As a Hub, we want to be your one-stop-shop for information on the latest decisions facing our generation, and all Edmontonians. We hope our ‘conversations’ will provide you with enough information to make an informed decision.

With these posts we will be starting conversations, but we will also be giving you the facts. Straight up. If you think we’re not providing the whole story feel free to let us know.

One of the major decisions facing our generation is the redevelopment of the city centre airport lands.

I’ll let the City of Edmonton explain the rest…

The City has now completed its latest phase of public consultation.  Citizens provided observations on five conceptual designs and videos from teams from North America and Europe as part of their submission to redevelop the City Centre Airport lands. Those observations will be considered by a Selection Committee in the decision to choose a winning team and they will also be considered during the upcoming 15-month planning process which will further define the winning conceptual plan and, among other items, roads, subdivisions, land uses, green space amenities, etc.

It is important to remember the City is choosing the best team instead of choosing the best conceptual design. The best elements of all these designs will be considered for incorporation into the final master plan.

This website is one way people can become informed and be part of the decision making process.

Question of the Month – May

Each month, the Engage working group wants to ask you a question. This is your opportunity to share your inner thoughts and insights on topics that are relevant to all next geners in Edmonton.

This month we’re getting a bit existential, but, we also want to know how we can use the question of the month to provide you with great information about issues and activities taking place in our city.

So, this month we are asking you:

What should the question of the month be?

Please post your comments below! At the end of the month, we’ll analyze the data and provide a summary of what we heard.
